I have long been fascinated by quotations, words of wisdom that have been passed down through the ages and are yet still as relevant today as ever. But I'd never taken them too seriously. That is until recently.
For the majority of my life I have sufferred from acute anxiety and depression. For 50 years it went undiagnosed. And to say my life was difficult would be an understatement. But not near as difficult as it was for the people who loved me, worked both for me and with me, and those who sufferred my personality disorder on a day-to-day basis. I constantly thought about ending it all.
But through fortunate circumstances, I was finally correctly diagnosed and treated. The drugs were a great start. But my problem was much more than just a lack of Serotonin. I also required intensive psychotherapy and counselling. As I soon discovered, I needed to learn a new way of thinking.
Australian psychiatrists have only recently collectively changed their minds about depression. They now acknowledge what expatriate psychologist Dorothy Rowe has been writing about for decades; that it is largely about our way of thinking. What Dr. Rowe says is that to overcome depression we need to learn to understand our way of thinking and to challenge it. Last year Dr. Rowe was voted one of the top 100 living thinkers in the world today.
My recovery initially involved finding a therapist with whom I could build a trusting and empathetic relationship. But my re-education was immensely facilitated by my Quotos research. The collection of quotations that accompany the photos in our range of Quoto designs are either ones from which I gained enlightenment, or ones I have written subsequent to that enlightenment.
Needless to say, today I live in a different place. I am, to those that know me well enough, a new person. And I owe much of it to the fact that at just the right time in my life I was putting together the first of the Quotos range. And for the first time in my life I had opened my mind to the possibilities that may result from re-educating my mind. If you believe in destiny, then it was no accident. I wish I'd found these truths a long time ago.
We feel the truths and words of wisdom that have been passed down through the ages hold the essential keys to a happy and fulfilling life. And they hold the secrets to success - from relationships to sport and business, but most importantly, to happiness and inner peace.
